FAQ

Where are the herbs and other raw materials sourced from?

We do our best to source as locally as possible. Most farms, if they’re not near Portland, Oregon, are grown in the state of Oregon. There are a few ingredients, such as cinnamon, cardamom and cacao, that don’t grow here. In those cases, we source from Oregon-based companies that do the raw material sourcing. This includes everything, including candle ingredients (and the woman who pours them!).

Can I reuse herbs for another steep/steam?

Yes! In the case of steams, you can reuse the herbs if they are stored in a covered, airtight container in the fridge and you use them within 24 hours.

In the case of beverage herbs, they are usually good for another steep.

In both cases, you may want to add another tsp of dry herbs to the used ones for optimal medicinal effects.

What do I do with the herbs after use?

Ideally, you would give them back to the land (i.e. deposit them on the ground, outside). If this is not possible, put them in a compost. And if you don’t have access to either option, you will be giving some herbal love to the trash, which, ultimately, will help the stuff in there be more connected to the earth.

What do I do during steaming?

There is no right answer for this.

Do what soothes you: that might be writing in your journal, that might be watching a show. Each time will likely be different. If you have small children, bring them into the experience. They can sit at your feet while you read them a story. It is wonderful modeling for children to see parents take care of themselves.

How do I ritualize?

Many cultures use fire to sanctify. This is why we offer candles. Lighting a candle will create a sacred experience.

What do I do with my candle when the wax is done?
  • Make sure your candle is completely cool before you start.
  • Place the vessel in the freezer for a few hours or overnight. The cold causes the wax to shrink and pull away from the sides.
  • Once frozen, use a butter knife or spoon to gently pop out the wax.
  • If the wick tab remains, pour hot water into the jar and let it sit for 20–30 seconds to loosen the metal wick tab. Then, use a spoon to carefully lift it out. Repeat with the hot water if needed.
  • Clean the vessel with warm, soapy water and a sponge to remove any remaining oils or soot.
  • Now your vessel is ready for a new life. Mug, cute pot for a plant, favorite things holder, or take it to Yo Soy Candle (in PDX) and have your candle refilled!
